Sara McCaslin and Robert McClure, two journalists who have raised money for in-depth reporting projects, shared their fundraising know-how with Northwest Science Writers Association (NSWA) members and guests at the monthly NSWA event Nov. 13 at University House. Tom Paulson moderated.
McCaslin is an editor and visual journalist at The Seattle Globalist. As a nonprofit organization, her team used Kickstarter to fund four international reporting projects, like her own Cost of Gender multimedia project. McCaslin gave tips on how you can use crowdfunding to launch your next reporting projects.
McClure is executive director of InvestigateWest, a nonprofit newsroom in Seattle specializing in the environment, public health and government accountability. A veteran newspaper reporter with a quarter of a century on the environment beat, he has been a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize and winner of the John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism. Robert was named in 2013 as one of Seattle Magazine’s “most influential” people in Seattle. As a co-founder of InvestigateWest and board member at the Society of Environmental Journalism, he has had extensive experience in applying for philanthropic grants.
