Ethics in science journalism

A panel of science writers joined us on Nov. 11 at University House for a discussion on the ethical boundaries of combining journalistic and non-journalistic work.

In today’s media landscape, science writing comes from a variety of sources – traditional media, magazines, university news offices, non-profit organizations’ reports, blog posts – and writers often take on work from several types of clients. What do writers think qualifies as a conflict of interest, and what are some best practices for avoiding them?

Thanks to the following writers for participating in the panel:

  • Ashley Braun – moderator
  • Sylvia Kantor, ‎Science Writer at WSU College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resource Sciences
  • Bryn Nelson, freelancer
  • Eric Scigliano, Crosscut and Washington Sea Grant
  • Wayt Gibbs, freelance science writer and editor; Executive Editor, Intellectual Ventures.
