Like it or not, sleep is an innate biological rhythm essential to human survival. However, despite thousands of years of study, sleep remains one of the great-unsolved questions of the life sciences.  Why do we spend nearly one-third of our lives in a semi-conscious state?  And what happens when we don’t get enough?  Similar to diet and exercise, a good night’s sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle.

In this talk, neurologist and sleep medicine specialist, Kim Hutchison, MD, will discuss what occurs in our brains when we slip into this daily unconscious state and what happens when we don’t get enough.  She will discuss the theories on why we sleep and how different stages of sleep are required for optimal function.  Lastly, Dr. Hutchison will explore REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, or dreaming sleep, and the meaning behind this subconscious dumping ground where fears, desires, and emotions create vivid and often illogical narratives. You are likely to leave with a few tips on how to improve your own sleep as well!

Kim Hutchison, MD, is an associate professor of neurology and sleep medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Dr. Hutchison earned her M.D. from the University of Kansas and completed her internship and her residency in Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed a fellowship in sleep disorders medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, where she spent 5 years seeing patients and studying the effects of sleep deprivation on the brain using functional imaging (fMRI).  Kim moved to Portland in 2011 where she joined the faculty at OHSU and combines clinical practice with teaching and exploring her research interests.  Named one of “Portland’s Top Docs” for 2014, Dr. Hutchison is the medical director for two sleep laboratories, including one on the Pacific island of Saipan, where she maintains a remote neurology and sleep medicine practice.  She is active in the frontiers of neurology including telemedicine, e-consults, innovations in sleep medicine treatment, and merging hospital systems.  Outside of medicine, Kim spends most of her time parenting two teens while sneaking in a few hikes with her dog and mindfulness trainings.  “Do good and enjoy what you do” is her motto.
