“Meet and Greets” to learn how to volunteer for the Mt. St. Helens Institute (MSHI)
The Mt. St. Helens Institute wants to recruit outdoors enthusiasts, hikers, climbers, public speakers, and people who have a love for nature at meetings on the following dates:March 15th 5:00pm-7:00pm at the New Seasons 2100B SE 164th Ave Vancouver, WA 98683. Join Michele, one of our Mountain Stewards, for coffee and cookies and to learn more about MSHI and how you can get involved.
March 23rd 7:00-8:00pm at the Clackamas REI 12160 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland, OR. Meet Steve and Larry, Volcano Volunteers, who will share information about the MSHI and share their experience as volunteers.
April 5th 5:00pm-7:00pm at the Longview library community room 1600 Louisiana St, Longview, WA 98632. Learn how you can become involved as a volunteer at the volcano in your backyard, Mount St. Helens.
April 7th 10:00-1:00pm at Camas Bike and Sport. Gear swap and MSHI gear drive. Bring your unwanted outdoor gear to barter, trade and sell to others. You can also donate your used gear to the Mount St. Helens Institute. If you have equipment to sell or trade please RSVP to this event for more details. Judges Needed for NWABR Middle School Essay Contest: March 14-April 2
Reitha Weeks at NWABR brings us this chance to volunteer as an essay contest judge:Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR) invites you to be a judge! Over 700 middle school students are planning to participate in our “Biomedical Breakthroughs and My Life” essay contest.
7th and 8th grade students write about the development of medications or medical devices used by themselves or relatives. For many students, it is the first time that they have written a research paper and the first time that they have thought about the research process and how new medications are developed. Judges may participate in one or two rounds of judging: March 14-20 and March 26-April 2. Judges receive scoring criteria and 6-8 essays/round by email. Each student will receive comments from the judges.

WTSA needs judges for conference March 22-24
Ross Short, executive director of the Washington Student Technology Association, provided the following information:I am writing to see if you could forward this to your members to see if any of them would be interested in helping us to judge at our state conference on March 22-24, 2012 at the Bellevue Hilton. We offer over 50 competitive events at the middle and high school level. These contests cover the areas of Engineering, Manufacturing, Architecture, Construction, Video Production, Music Production, Graphics Design & Desktop Publishing, Electronic Game Design, Photography, Technical Writing, Public Speaking, Job Interview, and other general leadership areas which we are looking for judges. We would greatly appreciate any help that you could give us. Most of the contests will be held on March 23rd at the Bellevue Hilton.

VA Hospital Seeking Animal Care and Use Committee Volunteer
Cyndi Pekow, DVM at the Seattle VA Puget Sound Health Care System, alerted us to the following opportunity:The Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System (AKA The Seattle VA Hospital) is looking for a volunteer to join our institutional animal care and use committee. Government regulations require all animal care committees evaluating medical research proposals have as a member a person who is in no way affiliated with the institution. This community member represents the interests of the public in deliberating on animal care and use in medical research. Our animal care committee meets once per month for about 2 hours on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
