Sylvia Kantor writes for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rocky Mountain Research Station’s “Science You Can Use Bulletin” about an increase in cases in which forest resilience and recovery are pushed beyond a breaking point by wildfire. As a result of continued severe fires in the western U.S., more forests have been converting to grassland or shrubland instead of recovering as forest. USDA scientists and land managers are considering a framework for developing climate change adaptation and management responses based on the concept of resisting, accepting or directing these profound ecological changes.
