It’s now or never for saving the Northern Spotted Owl, Ashley Braun (@AshleyBraun) writes for Audubon Magazine. While no longer in the spotlight as they were during the “Timber Wars” of the late 20th century, the birds are in even graver danger now as the invasive Barred Owl butts in and wildfires ravage its territory, which is already scarred and reduced by logging and development. Something needs to be done, fast, to save the remaining 3,000 or so birds in the wild, but many worry that efforts now underway may come too late for the species. Braun takes us on a tour of the places these creatures still live, amongst the people working to save them. Photo: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
