Earlier this year, Wudan Yan (@wudanyan) published a feature in Popular Mechanics on the noise pollution a cryptocurrency mine is inflicting on a small town in North Carolina. (The Open Notebook ran a behind-the-scenes piece on her story last month.) In her story, she talks to numerous residents near the facility who describe the effects the incessant rumble of its fans have on their wellbeing. Her detailed discussions of crypto mining, the legal and political issues at play, and the effects of noise pollution on humans and the natural environment are made all the richer by her place-based storytelling.
