From new member Karen Povey, Takahē (“tok-a-hay”) becomes the word of the day as she dives into the stunning recovery of the bird’s population. Located in New Zealand, the Takahē, a large, pudgy, flightless bird, was declared extinct back in 1898. However, that was proven to be false when a doctor, some 50 years later, decided to investigate a remote mountain and discovered the birds alive and well. Of course, their numbers had far from rebounded to a healthy status of little concern, but it had been growing slowly and steadily throughout the decades. Now, these birds with a beautiful deep green to emerald green plumage roam the natural conservation areas. Follow Povey’s piece as she takes on an exciting journey to learn about the Takahē in her own travels.
