Precision Medicine in a Post-Genomic Era (virtual available)

Category: General Precision Medicine in a Post-Genomic Era (virtual available)

May 17, 2024

Hosted by Seattle Children's Research Institute.

You are invited to join Seattle Children’s Research Institute for our Frontiers in Pediatric Research lecture series, featuring microbiology pioneer Dr.Ulf Nehrbass, CEO of the Luxembourg Institute of Health and the Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg.

Dr. Nehrbass’s lecture, “Precision Medicine in a Post-Genomic Era,” examines the immune system as a shared functional module between health and disease. The lecture will draw on real-world data from prospective patient cohorts to comprehend shared molecular mechanisms between different diseases. In order to understand idiopathic disease etiologies, Dr. Nehrbass sees the need to go beyond an emphasis on genetic data sets and include a range of multidimensional readouts to delineate challenges on a personalized level.

Educating others about today’s converging crises is an uphill battle. We must first overcome people’s apathy and denial. We must also outcompete the many distractions vying for their attention, including misinformation and disinformation. Learning to combine factual information and compelling narrative takes skill, and Dr. Emma Frances Bloomfield’s newest book Science v. Story: Narrative Strategies for Science Communicators invites readers to hone this skillset. Quillwood Academy founder Eric Garza will facilitate a reading group on Science v. Story that begins on Friday, May 17, at 1:00 pm US Eastern Daylight Time. To find out what time this is where you live, type your city, town, or time zone in the “Add locations” box at this link. The reading group meets at this same time every other Friday through July 12. Registration for this event is offered by donation, which can include a donation of zero. To sign up, type the amount you want to pay in the “Choose price” box, add the study group to your shopping cart, and check out. If you want to pay by personal check or money order, email eric@quillwood.org to arrange payment.

Dr. Scholz is a graduate of Oregon State University, where he earned two undergraduate degrees, a Master of Public Health (MPH), and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). His master's degree, with a focus on epidemiology and disease surveillance, has been particularly useful in his work with the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Dr. Scholz's public health background provides him with a unique perspective that enhances his ability to collaborate with colleagues and address diseases that can affect both animals and humans.

Co-Sponsored with the Epidemiology Program.
