Volcano erupting against a dark skyMember Lindsey Doermann writes about the Hayli Volcano that erupted in Northern Ethiopia in late 2025.The resulting volcanic plume reached the upper troposphere before eventually crossing into parts of India and China, causing airline disruptions. NASA and other satellite data captured the resultant plume and analyzed it, finding sulfur dioxide as well as other pyroclastic material. The cause of this eruption was tectonic plates pulling away from one another, allowing magma to bubble to the surface in pockets, many feeding volcanos. Haylii Gubbi’s eruption was far from the first time the volcano has done so, however, geologists have not come to a consensus on when it last erupted. To understand more about the fascinating behavior of hte volcano and its effects, learn more with Doermann’s piece.
