Rising heat levels around the world poses threats to many people and industries, now Rebecca Dzombak turns the attention to a new issue brought on by climate change – air temperatures. While planes themselves are engineering to withstand the worst possible conditions, experts suggest that heat with pose further disruptions to air travel as climate change worsens. For planes, getting off the ground requires lift to take off, but heat alters the density of the air as well as thrust generation from propellers, causing degraded performance from engines. Turbulence, often causing an alarming uncomfortable sensation to passengers, are also being increased in severity and frequency owing to climate change. While it’s still safe to fly, take a look at the many impacts that will affect airlines in Dzomark’s piece.
