For Hakai Magazine, Kevin Gepford takes us along on a journey to the Galapagos’ most-developed island to meet the famed tortoises as they struggle to tread the seasonal migration routes they’ve used for hundreds of thousands of years. Increasing development has brought roads, nonnative vegetation like Himalayan blackberry and other blockades that threaten the survival of these unique reptiles. Gepford explains the threat to the creatures and what researchers and local people are doing to try to preserve their ability to migrate. Photo: Cheryl McCleary-Catalano via Wikimedia Commons
