Virginia Gewin interviewed five scientists who have left academia for science-related jobs elsewhere. In her piece for Nature, we hear how researchers in a range of scientific fields found new careers in scientific publishing, consulting, nonprofits, and biotech. The interviewees explain how their new jobs use the skills they gained in academia in new ways — but without the crushing workloads, discrimination and other ills they experienced in academics. They offer tips to others who are thinking of making the same leap.
