In her feature in Hakai Magazine, new member Adrienne Mason embeds us in the Canadian Coast Guard’s Coastal Nations Search and Rescue program, which formally recognizes a longstanding reality: Coastal Indigenous peoples are often the first rescuers on the scene when maritime disaster strikes along the rough coasts of British Columbia. The program offers equipment, training and coordination to help First Nations ocean rescuers do more effectively and safely what they have always done for people in distress in their waters. Mason weaves together the voices and perspectives of First Nations participants in the program with those of Coast Guard officials, and she shows us what it takes to rebuild trust after historic betrayals.
