For Oregon State University’s Strata Magazine, Nancy Steinberg profiles the work of Astrid Leitner, who studies areas of the ocean that have rarely — or never — been explored. Steinberg explains the tools and techniques the scientist uses to observe and take samples from areas of the ocean with dramatic features, like underwater mountains, to learn how this landscape affects the community of living things there. Steinberg shares Leitner’s passion for these ecosystems with us and the importance of the work for humanity. Image: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
