In STAT, Wudan Yan covers a first-of-its-kind experimental program in North Carolina that helps at-risk families access healthy foods and safe housing. The program aims to address some of the social factors that can have major impacts on health. Yan talks to several beneficiaries of the program about how it has helped them improve their lives, get healthier and even wean off of some prescription medicines. And, she reports, the program has helped build community and social cohesion in the areas where it operates. (Yan tells ScienceWire that a similar program is now up and running in Washington state.)
