Vince Beiser (@VinceBeiser) won in the journalism category in the 2022 NSWA Best of the Northwest Awards for his story on the ongoing efforts to trap carbon in stone as a way to slow climate change. The judges wrote that Beiser used an engaging writing style to explain a difficult subject. Originally published in Wired, the piece takes us onsite to a new direct air-capture plant in Iceland and an upcoming facility in British Columbia. Beiser talks to some of the key players and gives an overview of this new technology, just coming into its own through daunting engineering challenges, staggering costs and thorny ethical questions.
