Flu season is here, Bonnie Rochman writes, and among the initial reports of cases, it’s shaping up to be one of the busiest flu seasons in recent history. In their piece for Fred Hutch Cancer Center, local hospitals saw an increase in the number of patients with the flu. Guidelines from the COVID-19 pandemic are still applicable here, as experts say, such as wearing well-fitting masks in enclosed indoor spaces or practicing good hand hygiene. However, a headache for infectious disease experts and other medical personnel has appeared in the form of a lack of good quality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This data that is usually accessible and published is instead being limited by the federal government, forcing hospitals to instead rely more on information from the state. Check out Bonnie Rochman’s work on the latest situation with the fight against the flu.
